When someone says “get your NIE”, they may mean different things: an identification number, a card or registration as a European Union citizen. Before booking an appointment, establish exactly which document the procedure requires and what status you need to prove.

NIE: the number that identifies a foreign national

The Número of Identidad of Extranjero identifies foreign nationals in their dealings with the Spanish authorities. It may be assigned because of economic, professional or social interests. The National Police explains how to request an NIE. This procedure is separate from applying for a residence authorisation.

Having an NIE does not, by itself, give you permission to live or work in Spain. To understand your rights, check the authorisation or legal framework that applies to you. The number should also be distinguished from the document on which it appears.

The Tarjeta of Identidad of Extranjero is a personal document used to establish its holder’s legal status in Spain. It displays the NIE, but the card and the number are different things. Article 209 of the Immigration Regulations governs its issue, validity and replacement.

The card must correspond to the authorisation or right on which it is based. Read the decision and its conditions to confirm, for example, whether you may work. If the card is lost, issuing a replacement for that reason does not renew the underlying authorisation.

Registration certificate for EU citizens

Citizens of the EU, the European Economic Area or Switzerland who intend to live in Spain for more than three months should check the procedure for registration in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. The certificate records details including their NIE and registration date.

The National Police website sets out the EU registration certificate procedure and required documents. Producing just any NIE certificate is not enough: applicants must demonstrate the requirements relevant to employment, study or another situation provided for by law.

What to check before booking an appointment

  • The document requested: ask the organisation for its exact name.
  • Your circumstances: nationality, reason for staying and applicable authorisation or right.
  • The procedure needed: number assignment, EU registration, card issue or renewal of an authorisation.
  • What to bring: check the official instructions, form and fee for the specific procedure before paying.

Keep decisions, proof of applications and identity documents organised separately. A tidy file makes it easier to explain your circumstances without relying solely on a photograph of your card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work just because I have an NIE?

The number alone does not grant permission to work. Check the legal framework and authorisation applicable to your circumstances.

Does the EU certificate replace my passport?

It is a registration certificate. Registration requires a passport or national identity document and the relevant supporting documents. Keep your identity document valid.

What if I do not know which appointment to book?

Gather the request you received and any decision on your case. Identifying the procedure first helps avoid attending with the wrong application form.
