Before starting an online procedure, check how you will identify yourself and sign the application. Having an NIE does not mean your electronic access is active. Preparing early helps avoid discovering a login problem on the day a deadline expires.
Digital certificates and Cl@ve: different routes
The FNMT individual certificate links your identity to signature verification data. Cl@ve provides access to participating public services. You do not have to choose one option permanently: check the methods accepted by the portal you need.
Logging in and signing an application are separate steps. The procedure may specify an identification method, registration level or additional signing tool. Completing a form does not, by itself, mean you have submitted it.
What to check before registering
- Identity: check document validity and make sure your name and identification number match.
- Your own contact details: use a phone and email address you can continue accessing.
- Device: choose a trusted device and check the technical requirements for your chosen route.
- Timing: allow time to verify your identity, download the certificate and resolve problems.
FNMT offers several routes, including in-person verification, video identification, DNIe and a mobile device. Follow the instructions for your chosen route rather than combining steps from different guides.
Your Cl@ve registration level matters
The official Cl@ve registration portal distinguishes basic and advanced registration. Basic registration does not provide access to every service or to Cl@ve Firma. Check the requirements of your procedure and how to obtain the appropriate level.
Keep the procedure instructions, supporting files and a list of outstanding steps in one folder. This makes it easier to distinguish an identification problem from a missing document.
Submit and keep the evidence
- Open the official portal using a verified address.
- Identify yourself and check the details in the form.
- Attach complete, readable files with clear names.
- Complete the signing and submission steps required by the portal.
- Download the registration receipt and check its date, reference and attachments.
- Monitor the application status and the specified notification channel afterwards.
A screenshot of a completed form does not replace a submission receipt. If an error appears, save its wording and check whether the application was registered before submitting it again.
Protect your electronic identity
Do not send certificates containing private keys, passwords or access codes through messaging apps. The FNMT good-practice manual explains why safeguarding keys matters. If a professional assists you, arrange representation through a method accepted for the procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Does an NIE activate Cl@ve automatically?
No. The NIE is an identification number. Registering for Cl@ve and obtaining a certificate are separate processes.
Can every Cl@ve registration be used to sign?
No. Check the registration level and signature method required for the specific procedure.
How can I tell whether my application was submitted?
Find the portal’s registration receipt and check its details. Logging in, saving a draft and submitting are different actions.
